True
story: At 4:30 p.m. tonight I was walking
out of a forum held by Dr. Phil Eaton, President
of SPU. Behind me, a professor from my
department asked, "Dick, do you need a ride
home? I can take you as far as Mercer
Island." I'd been thinking, "Take the
Metro 17 to downtown, transfer to the Sound
Transit 550 in the bus tunnel, then catch a 202
on Mercer Island to SE 40th St. and start
walking . . . " I got door to door
service from my colleague. God is good.
Good thing I didn't try to go home and
catch the team bus from BCS. The team
weighed in at 5:00 p.m. at Mercer Island High
School, just before I arrived. Then they
waited over two hours while Mercer Island
finished a dual with O'Dea High School.
Tonight
our Vikings gave up a number of forfeits at the
upper weights, then were weak in the lower
weights. But from 125 to 145, BCS was
awesome.
Editorial:
Mercer Island has a fine wrestling
team with all the depth one would expect at a 3A
school with a quality program. However,
this fan questions their decision to put a team
of mostly junior varsity wrestlers against the
BCS varsity. Perhaps this is a common
practice of which I am not aware. But,
unless this plan is shared with the visiting
coach, it seems to lack in sportsmanship.
Certainly, novice wrestlers need a suitable
challenge, but so do a teams' top wrestlers.
I am reminded of certain NFL teams who coasted
into the playoffs, not wishing to risk injury to
their top players. ―
